Mastering the Aim: from 5ws to Quantifiable

What is an "Aim"?

An "Aim" is usually written at the beginning of the lesson plan and provides a clear understanding of what the lesson will focus on. The "aim" and the "objective" should not be treated interchangeably. The "Aim" can be defined as the focus of the lesson. For example, "How can we find the main idea of a passage?" If a student were to walk into your class, they would be able to decipher that the lesson is going to be about main idea. What is a quantifiable aim? A quantifiable aim is one that has a specific number of steps, task, etc required for students to complete that would allow them to achieve the desired outcome. By quantifying the aim, students are allowed to practice a specific strategy that would allow them to be successful beyond that individual lesson. For example, rather than saying "What is the main idea of The Great Gatsby" try "What are 1-2 steps we can employ to determine the main idea of a novel?" Here are some everyday steps teachers can take to make our aims more quantifiable and therefore catapult our lesson planning into a more organized and streamlined map for success....
